Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is beatable with structure. This is the revision framework our IGCSE tutors use with students in Cape Town, across South Africa and in Zambia.

Know your tier

Core caps your grade but has gentler questions; Extended opens the top grades and expects algebraic fluency. If you’re borderline, decide by mid-course — the revision strategies differ. Extended candidates should over-invest in algebra, functions and trigonometry, which anchor the hardest questions.

Topic priority

Marks concentrate in: algebra and graphs, geometry and mensuration, trigonometry, and probability/statistics. Number work appears everywhere but rarely as whole questions. Revise in that order of weight, not in syllabus order.

The eight-week plan

Weeks 1–3: re-learn weak topics from notes and worked examples, finishing each with 20 topic-specific past-paper questions. Weeks 4–6: mixed-topic practice — one full paper per week, marked against the official scheme, errors logged. Weeks 7–8: timed papers under exam conditions, alternating Paper 2/4 (or 1/3 for Core), re-drilling every logged error type until it stops recurring.

Mark-scheme habits

Cambridge awards method marks generously — show working even when the answer is wrong, keep intermediate values unrounded, and answer to the accuracy the question demands (the classic three-significant-figures trap costs thousands of candidates every sitting).
